BLUEBOTTLES have spoiled the otherwise glorious swimming conditions at most Illawarra beaches during the past two days.

Surf Life Saving Illawarra director Gerald Davies said lifesavers had been called to attend a number of bluebottle stings along the coast and this was expected to continue over the weekend.

Mr Davies said people who chose to swim at unpatrolled beaches were proving a headache. Five swimmers were rescued at Puckeys Beach yesterday alone.

The traditional trouble spots were Puckeys Estate, the areas between Fairy Meadow and Towradgi beaches, Sandon Point and Bulli beaches, and Little Austinmer Beach just north of the main beach.

"These areas will be our main focus over the next two days," he said.
