BYSTANDERS fought unsuccessfully to resuscitate a 67-year-old man who died after swimming laps at Austinmer pool yesterday.

Ambulance and police were called to the pool at 1pm after reports a man had collapsed.

Norm Rees, district officer for the Illawarra Ambulance Service, said the man, who had been fitted with a pacemaker, went into cardiac arrest and collapsed 5m from the pool.

"Bystanders did CPR but he failed to respond," Mr Rees said.

Paramedics also tried to revive the man, but they were unsuccessful.
