Mega swim for a worthy cause

WOLLONGONG Swim Club members swam more than 90km in the 24-hour "mega swim" at the University of Wollongong pool.Led by coach Chris Buchanan, who was the first swimmer in the water, the team of 12 from the club - including 10 children - chalked up 1820 laps, or a total of 91.1km, to help fight multiple sclerosis.One swimmer from each team that took part was in the water at all times and Buchanan was elated with his team's efforts."I am extremely proud of what the young lads - plus one dad - achieved," Buchanan said."By using their physical prowess they managed to raise funds for an organisation vital to the well-being of others."National 1500m champion Robert Hurley lent his time for the benefit swim and proved an inspiration to the young swimmers.The Wollongong Swim Club members who took part in the 24-hour event were Chris Buchanan, John Cohen, Isak Delich, Lachlan Konza, Andrew Mackenzie-Wood, Jack Mackenzie-Wood, Hugo Mackenzie-Wood, James Needham, Dino and Marco Panozzo, Daniel St George and Frazer Worthington.Jules Cleary and Blake Morgan-Monk also swam for other teams.Wollongong Swim Club hopes to enter three teams in the event next year.
